Roy was born in the UK but has lived in New Zealand for more than sixty five years. During his career in the RNZAF and later, civilian industry, he lacked the time for painting and instead concentrated on photography, winning both national and international awards.

On retirement he moved to watercolour painting, initially studying with Brian Millard at the Mairangi Arts Centre where he served on the board for twelve years. He is also a member of the Auckland Watercolour Society, the New Zealand Watercolour Society and Estuary Arts. Further study has included time with Australian painter, David Taylor and a period with Tasmanian painter, Tony Smibert, plus numerous workshops with well know local painters.

Roy’s paintings are in a number of New Zealand and overseas collections including the UK, USA and Australia. His awards include a number at AWS exhibitions and include “Watercolour of the Year” at the Mairangi Arts Centre. His painting subjects are widely varied and include landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes – particularly influenced by his earlier other long time activity – sailing.
