Report from the Auckland Watercolour Society meeting 10th August 2015
The August meeting was well attended even though it must have been one of the coldest days this winter; there were a good number of paintings on display for the challenge.
We had the privilege of having Ken Garrett as our speaker. Ken introduced some welcome innovations to our meeting including a novel way of conducting the appraisals of the challenge entries. He asked all the artists to say why they had painted the particular scene and what they thought they would change to improve the painting were they to paint it again. He also asked people to meet in a circle - more cosy and informal.
The subject was "farm yard animals". Several outstanding paintings and a general improvement was evident.
The shadings and tones were fantastic.
Gavin presented the finalists in the Australian Archibald portrait competition recently held in Sydney.
This is the most prestigious competition and exhibition held in Australia each year. The winner was an
almost black-and-white full length portrait of a well-known judge. Google up "Archibald portraits" for more information and pix.
Ken then spoke about his early days as an artist and gave us anecdotal experiences from his life as a painter. A very pleasant afternoon that passed by in no time at all.
